Top All-Time Texas Football Quarterbacks – Number 2: Colt McCoy (2006-09)

Career stats: 13,253 passing yards, 112 TDs, 45 INTs, 70.3 completion %, 155 passer rating, 1,571 rushing yards, 20 rushing TDs

Statistically speaking, there was no quarterback in Longhorn history more dominant than Colt McCoy. He currently holds just about every Texas passing record in the book and was wildly successful during his time under center.

If it wasn’t for one untimely injury, McCoy may even hold the No. 1 spot on this list. Unfortunately, during the 2010 National Championship game against Alabama, one hard hit to the shoulder abruptly brought his opportunity to cement his legacy to an end. Unable to play, McCoy watched as the Longhorns and Gilbert struggled to keep pace with the Crimson Tide.

Had McCoy not been injured, it may have been a different story. That’s not how history unfolded, though, which is why the legendary Texas passer doesn’t have a national title to his name. As we all know, those championships tend to hold a lot of weight when naming the greats.

For an undersized, out-of-nowhere quarterback, McCoy quieted all doubters in a hurry. He led the Longhorns to countless wins, was a Heisman finalist twice, and always seemed to put everything on the line for his teammates. There’s no denying that he’ll forever live among the greatest gunslingers to ever wear the burnt orange.
