Top All-Time Texas Football Quarterbacks – Number 1: Vince Young (2003-05)

Career stats: 6,040 passing yards, 44 TDs, 28 INTs, 61.8 completion %, 144.9 passer rating, 3,127 rushing yards, 37 rushing TDs

Was there really any question who the top quarterback in Texas history would be? He may not hold all of the records like McCoy, but there was no one whose hands you wanted the ball in when the game was on the line.

Vince Young stepped onto campus as a star. A local legend in the Houston high school football community, he joined the Longhorns as a lauded recruit with unimaginable potential. Unfortunately, it took until his third year in Austin to finally become the full-time starter.

When he did, though, it was over for anyone unlucky enough to get matched up against Texas. Although it took some time for him to develop into a dynamic passer, it was his mix of athleticism and instincts that made him such a threat. If he wasn’t tossing bombs for six points, he was gouging defenses with his uncanny ability to gain yards on the ground.

It wasn’t until his redshirt junior season, though, that Young truly saw his star shine brightest. In that season, he flourished as a passer while still showing off that elite athleticism and scrambling mastery. He led the Longhorns all the way to the BCS Championship game, where he pulled off one of the ultimate last-minute heroic moments in college football history.

That run shocked the world, and solidified Young as one of college football’s top talents.

During his time as the Longhorns’ leader under center, Young compiled a record of 30-2. He gave the school its first national title in 24 years. More than anything, he proved that nothing was impossible when he had the ball. All the makings of a true legend and No. 1 all-time Texas quarterback.
