Recent Notable Names Who Didn’t Make the List

Pretty much since the departure of Colt McCoy, finding a quality quarterback has been a struggle for Texas. Sure, they’ve had some playmakers under center. However, none have quite lived up to the school’s history of consistently fielding outstanding signal callers.

Still, there have been a few noteworthy passers in the last decade or so that deserve a nod. So here are a few more recent Longhorns quarterbacks worth a mention before we dive into the 15 best in school history.

Garrett Gilbert (2009-11)

There was so much hype surrounding Garrett Gilbert when he committed to Texas. The hype built even more when he managed to earn the backup job as a freshman. However, between injuries, inconsistent play, and a turnover-riddled showing during the 2009 National Championship, not much went his way. His sky-high potential truly went unfulfilled when he opted to transfer to SMU after the 2011 season, bringing his career at Texas to a bitter end.

Case McCoy (2011-13)

The younger brother of a certain legendary Texas quarterback, Case McCoy never managed to make a significant impact in Austin. Sure he had a few impressive performances and even holds the record for most consecutive passes thrown without an interception. Overall, though, he underwhelmed while failing to ever earn the full-time starting gig. His 9-7 record as the starter certainly didn’t help his cause.

Tyrone Swoopes (2013-16)

When Tyrone Swoopes arrived at Texas, expectations were through the roof. Unfortunately, as his time on campus passed, it became clearer and clearer that he wasn’t the answer at quarterback. That’s not to say he didn’t make plays — he was a terrific athlete who helped the Longhorn offense stay afloat in some down years. However, in the end, his lack of polished passing abilities led to him being considered little more than a disappointment. Swoopes is now trying his luck in the NFL as a tight end.
