One of the current high school prospects that Texas is hotly pursuing at this moment is a four-star wide receiver and Arizona native in Jake Smith. This Notre Dame Preparatory product would be a massive addition to the 2019 recruiting class for Texas due to his extremely unique skill set.

Smith recently announced his two finalist schools as Texas and the USC Trojans. Interestingly enough, Texas and USC face off in the back end of a home-and-home series this fall. USC emerged victorious in that battle last year, but home field advantage could sway the matchup into the favor of the Horns.

As the second ranked prospect out of Arizona, Smith is a very good recruit that can add a new dynamic to whichever offenses he ultimately chooses to join. Texas does have the top rated current commit at the same position as Smith, but him and Whittington are two different wide receivers as to where they provide the most value.

Smith is also the 104th overall prospect in the nation and the 17th best at wide receiver. Texas has a great group of wide receivers coming back in 2018. But, the Horns lose quite a few of those guys next year including Collin Johnson, Jerrod Heard, and John Burt. Texas needs to add some new talent to the mix in the receiving corps which makes Smith so important.
