One of the upcoming huge non-conference battles for Texas within the next decade is the Michigan Wolverines. However, Michigan also had itself a classic matchup with the Horns after the conclusion of the 2004 regular season, in the 2005 Rose Bowl. Jan. 1 gave college football fans a treat among the BCS Bowls.

Entering this contest, both Texas and Michigan had one key loss that knocked each squad out of BCS National Championship Game contention. Michigan fell short against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish while Texas had a heartbreaking defeat in the Red River Rivalry to the Sooners.

There was a whole host of stars for both teams, with linebacker LaMarr Woodley claiming the defensive MVP here, and Vince Young claiming offensive MVP for the Horns. Young’s legs guided Texas to the one point victory over the Wolverines, including three rushing touchdowns from him in the second half alone.

The most memorable part of this affair was Young promising the college football world that he, and the Horns, would be back in the Rose Bowl to play for a title the following season. Every Texas fan knows how that panned out, especially for the USC Trojans.
