The Red River Shootout got better as time went on since 2000. While Texas has fallen off in recent years in Big 12 contention, the Oklahoma Sooners have held strong. But, that gives Texas the opportunity to knock off the Sooners when national contention is at stake for OU.

However, in 2009, Texas was the program looking for the BCS National Championship bid. In this October 2009 matchup between Texas and OU and two extremely high-powered offenses, neither group could really find its way. Both Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and OU quarterback Landry Jones had trouble leading their respective offenses into the end zone.

Sam Bradford was held out of most of this game due to injury, which allowed a lagging Texas offense to keep up with the Sooners. It did take the Horns a fourth quarter field goal to walk away with this three-point victory over its hated conference rival.

Two interceptions of Jones also helped the Horns claim this victory. Both McCoy and running back Fozzy Whitaker had a tough time finding any room to pick up positive yards. Texas had to ride a great defensive performance to a 16-13 win in an absolute slugfest in this edition of the Red River Shootout.
