With fall camp fast approaching for Texas football, fans can pay attention to a handful of freshmen this year that are bound to have a breakout campaign.

There’s no shortage of young players to be excited about for Texas football considering the top three recruiting class that is coming to campus in Austin for the 2018 regular season. Even though the Longhorns don’t need to count on too many freshmen this year, it always helps to have that extra depth on the roster.

It’s very unlikely that Texas has more than one or two first-year players starting in the early weeks of the regular season. If those freshmen come through in a big way in the non-conference portion of the schedule, then they could work their way into the mix for a starting role.

The problem for all the freshmen for the Horns will not be talent, it’s battling past a number of experienced starters trying to carry over some momentum from the Texas Bowl victory over the Mizzou Tigers to round out the 2017 campaign. It would be a bad move coming from Texas head football coach Tom Herman to subside any confidence his squad is carrying from that win.

More than anything, any player who can make an impact will be welcome to the starting positions, just not too early. There’s a certain point to when a head coach should slot freshmen into the game. Each of these first-year players will be different in that regard too.

This list is composed of not only incoming freshmen from the 2018 recruiting class for the Horns, but also freshmen who received a redshirt last year.

Here’s a look at the five potential breakout freshmen to watch for the Texas Longhorns in 2018.
