With the 2018 college football season fast approaching, Texas football has a clear set of factors to improve upon through the summer workouts and fall camp.

The 2018 campaign will be here before we know it for Texas football, as it takes on the Maryland Terrapins in Week 1. Texas has a lot going for it for the upcoming season. According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, the Longhorns have the second best odds at winning the Big 12 in 2018. ESPN gave Texas a 21.1 percent chance of winning the 2018 Big 12 Championship. The Oklahoma Sooners were the only team given better odds for the Big 12 Title.

Moreover, ESPN also looks at the Horns in a favorable light for the projected record. Texas was given an estimated record of nine wins this season, which would be a great result for this program. That slotted Texas ahead of other competitive Big 12 programs like the Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, Kansas State Wildcats, West Virginia Mountaineers, and Iowa State Cyclones.

The Big 12 has an opportunity for some new teams to take hold of the top of the conference standings. A good amount of quarterback turnover allows for that chance for someone like Texas to have a big run in 2018.

Last season, first-year head football coach for the Horns, Tom Herman, started to right the ship. Some growing pains came about for Texas last year, and that will continue this fall. However, that’s expected for a completely new coaching staff following the Charlie Strong-era in Austin.

Expectations place the Horns needing at least eight wins this season. That is a realistic number considering the level of talent present for Texas in 2018.

Here’s the five keys to success for the Texas Longhorns in 2018.
