Texas Football: 5 best games ever for Colt McCoy with the Longhorns
Another great matchup between standout quarterbacks occurred between Texas and the Mizzou Tigers in 2008. Mizzou was coming off a cinderella season that saw them compete with the Kansas Jayhawks for the Big 12 Championship in 2007. However, Texas responded to both Kansas and Mizzou the following year by defeating both squads.
At this point of the 2008 regular season, Texas was ranked No. 1 in the nation by defeating some solid competition along the way. The Horns took down the Arkansas Razorbacks, Colorado Buffaloes, and the Sooners all before facing the No. 11 ranked Tigers in mid-October.
The spotlight was put directly on McCoy here, and this is one of the games that led to him garnering a Heisman finalist designation by season’s end. He only tossed two touchdowns in this surprising blowout victory at home in Austin. But, this was another instance where McCoy was able to use his legs to lead Texas.
McCoy added another two touchdowns on the ground, helping Texas beat Mizzou by a 25-point margin. Texas running back Chris Ogbonnaya also had a big game with 133 total yards and two touchdowns. McCoy had his hands full with high level offensive talent like Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel and wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Danario Alexander standing on the opposing sideline. Yet, he took care of business as usual for the 2008 campaign and completed more than 90 percent of his passes in the process.
