The lead up to the magical 2009 regular season for Texas was this Fiesta Bowl victory over former star quarterback Terrelle Pryor and the Ohio State Buckeyes. And, this was by no means that most statistically significant game for McCoy. But, he was able to cap off his junior campaign in proper fashion with a clutch showing in a BCS bowl in front of a national audience.

Texas put the game in the hands of McCoy, with 58 passing attempts. McCoy was able to answer the call by completing more than 70 percent of his passes for 414 passing yards and three total touchdowns. He outplayed the quarterback duo for the Buckeyes of Pryor and Todd Boeckman.

The Texas defense held strong by limiting the damage from two very dangerous Ohio State runners in standout running back Chris Wells and Pryor. McCoy used that to his advantage by keeping the Horns ahead on the scoreboard for most of the game. All three of his touchdowns came in the second half, so he came through when it mattered.

It seemed like then ranked No. 10 Ohio State could pull off the victory on a 15-yard touchdown run from Daniel “Boom” Herron. That’s when McCoy was able to shine. McCoy led the Horns down the field and capped off the drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Cosby to regain the lead.

McCoy would continue to come through with big performances for Texas throughout the 2009 campaign. He wound up leading them to a BCS National Championship Game appearance against Alabama in 2009, before a devastating injury caused Texas to fall short to Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide. No matter what happened there though, McCoy will go down as an all-time great for this blue blood football program.
