A host of upperclassmen are coming back for the 2018 campaign for Texas football, and a few are bound to emerge as leaders come this fall.

Texas football has so many players that could step up as junior and senior leaders this season. Even some sophomores established themselves in big roles for the Longhorns last season. Texas has 20 senior that are projected to be on the roster for the 2018 campaign, so there’s a ton of players to choose from in this regard.

The defense mainly has the bulk of the seniors coming back to campus in Austin this fall. A good portion of the seniors on the offensive side of the ball either won’t play too big of a role this year, or came into the mix via the grad transfer market. That would qualify as offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, running back Tre Watson, and wide receiver John Burt.

On the other hand, younger players like rising sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger and fellow rising sophomore safeties Chris Brown and Josh Thompson are in line to play huge roles for the Horns in 2018. The leadership factor will be huge for Texas this year too because this is still a coaching staff that is getting used to things for the Horns.

Texas head football coach Tom Herman is entering just his second full year with the program. He needs some voices to take control of the locker room in a positive manner to help this program take the next step forward that it’s supposed to this fall.

Here’s a look at five players that should be candidates to become captains for the Texas Longhorns in 2018.
