Texas Football: 5 captain candidates for the Longhorns in 2018
This is the type of player that can lead by example for Texas. Rising senior defensive back P.J. Locke III looks to split time possibly between safety and nickelback. Locke III has the skill set to fit in for both positions with his pursuit and tackling ability.
He’s also spent each of his three years in Austin switching between safety and nickelback/cornerback. The best stat line that Locke III ever posted came during the 2016 season in which he had two interceptions and six pass deflections.
The only major stat that Locke III posted a career high in last year was tackles for loss. One good thing about Locke III’s development last season was the progression in his positioning and tackling ability at and near the line of scrimmage. He became a well-rounded player last season that brings a ton of valuable experience to this secondary.
The Texas secondary is very difficult to figure out this season due to a ton of depth and a few departures from the 2017 team. Locke III, though, is guaranteed a ton of playing time this fall and will be a very important voice in this locker room for the Horns.
