Texas Football: Projected 2-deep depth chart for 2018
Right Tackle
1. Derek Kerstetter
Out of all the Texas offensive lineman, rising sophomore Derek Kerstetter should end up as one of the very best by his junior or senior campaign. As a freshman, Kerstetter dramatically improved as time went along. He did have a tough time adjusting early on, but the former three-star prospect found his way at the end of the regular season and on into the Texas Bowl win.
A full off-season, including a clear path to success through summer workouts, could mean a huge season in 2018 for Kerstetter. He needed something like that to get adjusted to the speed of the college game and find his way into an effective role on the line.
He’ll get just that with the spotlight on him leading up into fall camp too. His sophomore year could still have some growing pains, but Kerstetter has the raw ability and potential to become an All-Big 12 offensive tackle.
2. J.P. Urquidez
There’s somewhat of a dip for this position after you get past Kerstetter. But, rising redshirt sophomore J.P. Urquidez is a former four-star prospect that is just waiting to get his chance to make an impact. Texas was able to keep Urquidez in its grasp by landing him in the 2017 recruiting class, since he was to high school in the territory meant for the Horns.
This is a name to watch moving forward if all else fails with Kerstetter. Urquidez and Kersetter are both coming into the same year in their college career. It’s going to be tough for him to find an edge, but he needs to stay ready if the opportunity is presented.
