7. Talented incoming freshmen class

With the 2019 recruiting class for Texas picking up some steam now, we can still appreciate how abundant the skill is for the 2018 class. That class of incoming freshmen has quite a few players that could make an instant impact. Texas will also have depth in a lot more areas of the roster now with such a well-rounded class of 27 signees.

We’ll get a good gimps at the status of the incoming freshmen during fall camp. Herman might tip toe his way into playing some of these first-year players early in the regular season, especially with so many high stakes games. Putting a true freshman into a key spot against Maryland on the road or against USC might be the wrong move.

However, the new NCAA redshirt rule also has an impact on how Herman will use these freshmen. For example, the two highly-touted incoming freshmen quarterbacks in Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson can now play four games each without burning a redshirt. Not only would that keep each quarterback possibly eligible for an extra year in Austin, but also keep the separation between them and Sam Ehlinger and Shane Buechele comfortable.

The Texas defense will also get an immediate boost from some of these freshmen with five-star talents making their way into the secondary. Caden Sterns, B.J. Foster, DeMarvion Overshown, and Jalen Greene, are just a few names to watch that can make an impact in the secondary. Yet, Texas has freshmen talent coming into the mix at every level of the defense.
