3. Quarterback competition

This is not so much the excitement of the quarterback battle itself as much as finally finding an answer under center with Herman’s final decision for the starter. Sam Ehlinger and Shane Buechele have battled it out to win the starting job since early last season.

However, little clarity has been provided since then due to a roller coaster season for both quarterbacks. Buechele still has the experienced and the bigger arm of the two. It also might just take another off-season in this new offensive system for Buechele to get adjusted. Both reasons are legitimate arguments for why Buechele could work out this year.

Meanwhile, Ehlinger did make some freshman mistakes in 2017. Ultimately, he usually kept Texas in games that most felt the Horns had no business being in early in the season. Losses to USC, Oklahoma State, and OU might fit into that category. However, there’s some obvious areas in which he needs to improve in the passing game itself.

Buechele and Ehlinger both carry their own intrigue with them. At least Herman does have a few option to choose from here. Having more depth is better than choosing from a bunch of unproven quarterbacks. If nothing else, Herman has Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson to turn to at some point during the regular season.
