Quarterback issues have plagued Texas football over the past seven years since Colt McCoy left town, but will something change soon?

It’s been a long road for Texas football to find any level of success since the departure of former star quarterback Colt McCoy. The year after he led the Longhorns to the BCS National Championship Game against head football coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, things took a turn for the worst in Austin.

Surprisingly enough, McCoy actually had an up and down career statistically with the Horns. His freshman and junior campaigns were both extremely productive in tossing at least 29 touchdown passes with no more than eight interceptions for each season.

However, McCoy’s sophomore and senior campaigns saw him toss less than 28 touchdowns each season with double digit interceptions both times also. Either way, McCoy led the Horns pretty far each year he was the starting quarterback. That came to a head with that BCS National Championship Game appearance in his senior season.

The 2010 college football season wasn’t as friendly to the Horns once McCoy had departed. That was the year that the highly-touted five-star quarterback Garrett Gilbert got his chance in the spotlight. Yet, few highly rated quarterbacks were as disappointing as Gilbert for any program in the nation in recent memory.

Texas has been through a slew of quarterbacks since McCoy’s era was done in Austin. Three head coaches have also tried their hand at finding the answer under center since the 2010 season. That includes Tom Herman, Charlie Strong, and Mack Brown.

Here’s a look at the five best starting quarterbacks for the Texas Longhorns since the Colt McCoy-era ended.
