The stat line is not as strong for rising sophomore Sam Ehlinger as it is for Buechele over the span of an entire career. However, Ehlinger took the Horns to heights that Buechele never could as a freshman. Buechele saw Texas only win five games in his freshman season while Ehlinger led them to seven wins, including a Texas Bowl victory over the Mizzou Tigers.

And, Ehlinger is also a nice combination of the skill sets of Swoopes as a dual-threat quarterback and still having the ability to throw on the run similar to what someone like David Ash could do at times. Even though Ehlinger doesn’t have the same strength as a runner as Swoopes, he was able to lead the entire team in rushing yards in 2017.

We’ll see how Ehlinger pans out this fall for the Horns. Ehlinger carries some high expectations with him. The path to success is pretty clear for Ehlinger, but he’ll have a short leash if he can’t win some huge non-conference battles to start the regular season.

To take a next step forward this season and earn a spot like this on this ranking, Ehlinger needs to turnaround poor performances last year against Oklahoma State and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Freshman mistakes can happen especially in a national spotlight as intense as Texas football. Only time will tell if Ehlinger is for real for the Horns.
