Texas Football Recruiting: 5 prospects that could be the next 5-star commit for the Longhorns
A program that carries the level of expectations of a blue blood gives a lot of pressure for Texas football recruiting to haul in five-star commitments.
The momentum has slowed down a bit for Texas football recruiting in recent weeks. The last commitment for the Longhorns came through on June 16 with three-star defensive end Peter Mpagi announcing his potential destination for his college career to take place in Austin.
So far, Texas has one five-star commit locked up for the 2019 recruiting class in the form of five-star offensive tackle and Conroe, TX, native Tyler Johnson. A few key four-star commitments include wide receivers Jake Smith and Jordan Whittington, cornerback Kenyatta Watson II, and dual-threat quarterback Roschon Johnson.
Since the quarterback class for the 2019 recruiting cycle seems down, landing the fourth best dual-threat in the nation in Johnson was great for head football coach Tom Herman and Texas. This program does need to pickup a few key defensive recruits here soon to keep the momentum rolling on that side of the ball.
All in all, Texas has sent out 123 offers for high school prospects for the 2019 cycle, according to 247Sports 2019 Texas Football Offers. A few key targets already announced commitments to rival schools including four-star dual-threat quarterback Spencer Rattler to the Oklahoma Sooners and five-star offensive tackle Kenyon Greene to the Texas A&M Aggies.
Texas wrapped up the 2018 recruiting cycle with the third best class in the nation. It currently holds the 17th ranked class in the nation and the second best in the Big 12. Yet, Texas is far behind the Sooners in the national recruiting rankings at this point.
Here’s the five high school prospects that could be the next five-star commitment for the Texas Longhorns’ 2019 football recruiting class.
