It’s difficult to choose between so many great quarterbacks in the history of Texas football with numerous All-Americans and title winners to pick from.

Texas football has quite a few titles that were led by an All-American quarterback, or seasons that nearly resulted in the ultimate prize with the signal-caller playing that same role. Even within the past 12 years, the Longhorns have seen some of the best quarterbacks in the nation lining up under center in Austin.

One of the best positions in recent history for the Horns is at quarterback. That recent history goes back to the turn of the century since Texas hasn’t faired well since the departure of Colt McCoy following the program’s last appearance in a national title game.

Since then, Texas has had some trouble finding a good answer under center that can last for more than an entire season. David Ash, Tyrone Swoopes, Garrett Gilbert, and Case McCoy have all come and gone since then with some type of potential not panning out. Gilbert was expected to be a name on a list like this after McCoy, since he was such a highly-touted recruit, but that didn’t pan out either.

Texas could still see either rising sophomore Sam Ehlinger or rising junior Shane Buechele come through in a big way, but both had their ups and downs to start their college careers. A pair of four-star incoming freshmen also highlight Texas’ current quarterback situation between Casey Thompson and Cameron Rising.

Here’s a look at the five best quarterbacks in program history for the Texas Longhorns.
