Texas Football: 5 best quarterbacks in program history
The stats posted under Colt McCoy passing not only lands him as a career leader for Texas, but also among the most lucrative passing quarterbacks over the past decade in all of college football. No other Texas quarterback comes even close to matching his more than 110 career passing touchdowns to just 45 interceptions.
McCoy was a one time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and two time All-American. He is one of the most decorated players the program has ever seen, and his career stat line would blow you away. And, aside from a sophomore campaign that saw him throw 18 interceptions, McCoy was the best passer Texas ever had.
It’s easy to see how it was tough for any Texas quarterback to follow up the act that McCoy put together in his time in Austin. While Garrett Gilbert did fall dramatically short of expectations with the Horns, he was thrown into a tough situation in the 2009 BCS National Championship Game after McCoy went down with injury.
You’d figure that game might have gone a different way against the Alabama Crimson Tide if McCoy had remained healthy. Texas controlled most of the flow of the game up to that point, and that was the game that really set off the current dynasty for Alabama head football coach Nick Saban. McCoy was great enough that there’s no doubt that game could’ve given Texas its most recent national title if he stayed on the field throughout.
