A two man 2018 quarterback class marked a successful cycle for Texas football recruiting to add Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson to the mix in Austin.

Texas football recruiting diversified the quarterback position by signing two in the 2018 class with very different skill sets. Moving forward, Texas head football coach Tom Herman needs to reel in at least one talented quarterback in each recruiting cycle.

Looking between the 2016 and 2020 recruiting classes for the Longhorns, at least one four-star quarterback was signed or committed each year. That dates back to Shane Buechele and goes all the way to a 2020 dual-threat quarterback in Hudson Card.

That would be a nice trend to see continue throughout the next five years, for the Horns to keep getting numerous quarterbacks in each recruiting class. So far for the 2019 class, Texas has one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation committed in Roschon Johnson. It would be nice for the Horns to nab at least one skilled pro-style quarterback too.

Keep in mind that Texas has more leeway now for testing younger signal callers at some point in the regular season. With the new NCAA redshirt rule that allows freshmen to play in up to four games without having to burn a redshirt, Herman has more time to experiment with different options. That could also be big for Texas quarterbacks coming to campus in the near future like Card.

This new redshirt rule also means that scouting immediate impact players becomes much more important. We might see more incoming freshmen play early in the year than ever before. True freshman starting quarterbacks are a current trend in college football now anyway.

The 2018 quarterback class for the Horns has some intriguing potential to it. We’re taking a look at those quarterbacks that have already made their way to the Forty Acres for the 2018 Texas football recruiting class.
