Four different options highlight the quarterback choice that Tom Herman will have for Texas football to start the 2018 season.

Texas football is looking at a quarterback battle this fall that is four deep. Two of those quarterbacks are incoming freshmen that would have to show up huge in fall camp and any shots they do get early in the regular season. The other two quarterbacks include one sophomore and one junior.

Last season, the opportunity to win the starting quarterback job for the Longhorns was split between then freshman Sam Ehlinger and sophomore Shane Buechele. The two incoming freshmen four-star quarterbacks in Casey Thompson and Cameron Rising made their way to campus as spring enrollees.

So, the first action at the college level for both Thompson and Rising came in spring camp and in the spring football game. At least each quarterback has some small body of work to go off of from practice at some point. That could help their cause when it comes down to it.

A lot of this decision for head Texas football coach Tom Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck comes down to how different they want this offense to look in 2018. And, if the coaching staff feels as if a freshmen quarterback has a better skill set tailored to their offensive scheme, it would be a good option to start the season off with.

Here’s a look at the case for each quarterback for the Texas Longhorns to start in 2018.
