The first quarterback case that we’ll focus on comes to the four-star dual-threat 2018 signee for the Horns in Casey Thompson. As the only quarterback commit in 2018 that was only ever committed to Texas, this program should have a heavy investment in Thompson.

If the passing game shows significant development this fall for Thompson, he could work his way into the starting quarterback battle more realistically in 2019. It would just take a nice combination of circumstances to align at some point early in the regular season for Thompson to get a shot to start.

Thompson did show the ability in high school, at times, to make some big throws from the pocket. His scrambling ability comes in handy when the pocket breaks down. Yet, that capacity to throw on the run consistently will be huge for Thompson.

The belief that the coaching staff can get the absolute best out of Thompson this fall is the main factor that would be working in his favor. Yet, the coaching staff would have the determining factor, because we haven’t seen that much out of Thompson yet. He showed glimpses into his capability to get out of a breaking down pocket but that was about it in the spring camp.
