The discussion surrounding sophomore Sam Ehlinger’s outlook for the Week 1 road matchup with the Maryland Terrapins should really kick into high gear once Big 12 Media Days concludes. Ehlinger generates more discussion than most any other Texas football player.

Originally a four-star quarterback signee out of Lake Travis High School in Austin, Ehlinger will still be a guy that the local fan base will support. He’s got a lot of raw talent that needs some work over the course of the rest of the off-season. We’re inching closer to the start of the 2018 season, so Ehlinger has to already be of a good mindset.

Ehlinger has the best shot at winning the Heisman Trophy on pretty much any odds list that you could look at during the preseason. His natural leadership ability should help him out in clutch time more so this year than last. He also had a few important learning opportunities in heartbreaking Texas losses in 2017.

Last season, Ehlinger totaled 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He led the Horns in rushing yards, even beyond all of the running backs, but posted a completion percentage well under 60 percent. Just by natural logic, Herman should give Ehlinger every shot at winning the starting job this year.
