It was junior Shane Buechele that had a host of chances to take hold of the starting job down the stretch in 2016, and at the start of 2017. Some injuries that were difficult to figure out seemed to hamper Buechele last season. If he’s fully healthy and ready to go in 2018, that could change the narrative for Buechele’s performance this year.

Quite a few Texas fans genuinely believe that Buechele is the best pure quarterback at this moment. His arm talent is undeniable, but even his accuracy comes and goes. He had some issues during the spring game in finding wide open receivers.

The stats have dropped off to say the least for Buechele since the final stretch of the 2016 regular season. He got off to as hot of a start as any freshman quarterback in the nation in 2016. That production tailed off down the stretch, and wound up with only seven touchdown passes and four interceptions in 2017.

The safest and most experienced option would go to Buechele to start the season. Yet, with three talented and younger options than Buechele set for Herman and the Texas offense, Buechele’s opportunity might be about done. Starting Buechele might seem like beating a dead horse for some Texas fans.
