Texas Football: Do the Longhorns have anyone who is elite in 2018?
Texas has a host of talent on defense, and most of the starters this year are seniors at least at the start of the regular season. One of those seniors is the primary cornerback in the secondary in Kris Boyd. Boyd definitely has the potential to put up the type of numbers that would allow him to garner “elite” status.
Some opposing teams picked on Boyd last season with his tendency to creep up in play action and get beat over the top. That should be his primary focus this off-season to improve before Week 1 comes around. The physical tools and previous spurts for Boyd show that he has the ability to take the next step to be a top corner in the nation at some point.
The loss of 2017 All-American safety DeShon Elliott to the NFL allows for the rest of the starters in the secondary in 2018 to see a boost in their stat lines. Elliott and his six interceptions can now be spread around to other defensive backs like Boyd, Davante Davis, and freshman Caden Sterns.
An issue for Boyd is that the maturity and discipline to be a top cover corner against all opposition is that his time is running out. Boyd had this issue for more than just the 2017 campaign. Fix that issue though, and his elite status could be achieved at some point this fall.
