Texas Football: Ranking the difficulty of every opponent in 2018
This matchup could be considered tougher than facing the Jayhawks when it’s all said and done. It’s never a wise idea for any Power Five coaching staff to overlook an underdog Tulsa team coached by Philip Montgomery. Last season, Tulsa only won two games finishing with a final record of 2-10 (1-7 AAC). It was a disastrous 2017 season for the program.
Texas will also be coming off an emotional matchup with a team that forced the Herman era to get off on a bad foot in 2017 in the Terps. Tulsa could prove to be a stingier opponent than expected with a host of returning starters coming back on both sides of the ball.
The Golden Hurricane also gets to get some confidence built in the week before facing the Horns. Facing the Central Arkansas Bears to start the 2018 campaign means that Montgomery can also start to get his quarterback situation settled between Luke Skipper and Chad President. Tulsa is likely to be mostly starting juniors and seniors across the board.
Texas didn’t get the cupcake FCS matchup this season, and its only non-Power Five conference contest comes against the commonly regarded sixth best conference in the nation in the AAC. Tulsa has bounced back before and the program can do it again. However, Texas should be at least a three or four possession favorite for this Week 2 meeting with the Golden Hurricane.
