A loaded incoming freshmen class of four-star wide receivers for the Horns will make the competition for playing time for the younger players difficult. Especially since the highest ranked wide receiver in the 2018 Texas football recruiting class Brennan Eagles has the maturity in his game and measurables to carve a role for himself immediately, it’ll be tough for everyone else.

The redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Pouncey had a nice spring camp and spring football game so he could find himself in a backup role with some key playing time this year. That pretty much leaves the two true freshmen wide receivers in Josh Moore and the Houston, TX, product Al’vonte Woodard.

Even beyond all the freshmen looking for playing time for the Texas receiving corps this year, there’s a host of upperclassmen that will command the starting spots. The pair of top junior wide receivers for the Horns in Collin Johnson and Lil’Jordan Humphrey will get the bulk of the targets from the quarterbacks.

While Herman could give Woodard a few looks this season, keeping a separation between him and the junior and senior wide receivers is the best move in this situation. Keep him eligible to redshirt and come back in a similar role to that of Pouncey in his second year with the program in 2019.
