Texas has four quarterbacks that are all skilled enough to win the starting job. Yet, it might be better for the Horns to move forward with a quarterback that’s more experienced for a change this season. Junior Shane Buechele and sophomore Sam Ehlinger are the favorites to win the starting gig.

The pair of talented four-star freshmen quarterbacks with vastly different skill sets in Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson are tempting to try out, though. Rising is better known for his arm and Thompson is better known for his legs. Both will have a quick chance to shake that label in the next two years.

Rising does look more game ready at the Power Five conference level than Thompson in spring camp and the spring game. Thompson also has some work to do with his passing ability before he can claim a starting job with as high of stakes as Texas. Rising is solid using both his arm and legs, despite the label of pro-style quarterback as a high school prospect.

Rolling with a dual-threat quarterback with so much talent on the outside in the receiving corps would likely be a mistake. Thompson could very well round out into one of the most dangerous and elusive quarterbacks in the Big 12. He’ll need some time to get adjusted to making the type of throws that the offensive coordinators and Herman expect him to.
