Texas Football: 5 freshmen the Longhorns should redshirt in 2018
Since Texas signed five offensive tackles, one of which was a JUCO prospect. there’s not going to be room for everyone at any point in time. The best way for new co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Herb Hand to handle this debacle is to develop a strategy for each tackle on a case-by-case basis.
No two players are ever going to develop exactly the same especially offensive lineman. However, the profile that four-star offensive tackle Rafiti Ghirmai enters Texas with makes him a prime candidate to be a difference maker in the future, but to also redshirt now.
The chances that Gharmai even gets a limited amount of playing time at offensive tackle this season are slim since there is so much depth on the Texas line across the board. Texas boasted one of the worst offensive lines in the Big 12 last season, but bringing back nearly every starter from last year should help out a lot.
The two freshmen offensive tackles that are the most likely to get playing time this year are the two highest rated at the position in the 2018 recruiting class with Reese Moore and Junior Angilau. Texas also brought in an intriguing three-star JUCO transfer at the position in Mikey Grandy that could actually start Week 1. Ghirmai has a bright future, but needs to take the time to develop in his first year on campus at Texas.
