Texas Football: 5 players with something to prove in fall camp
The top 2018 signee for the Horns was also the top ranked high school safety prospect in the nation in five-star Cibolo, TX, product Caden Sterns. He came to campus along with the other top rated Texas signee in five-star safety B.J. Foster. Sterns does have a better shot at winning a starting job at some point this year than Foster.
Both Foster and Sterns were two of the top three rated safety recruits in the nation. And, it signals an extremely bright future in the secondary for the Horns. Texas has possibly the best secondary in the Big 12 in 2018 with all the senior leadership returning at that level of the defense.
Adding talented freshmen safeties like Foster and Sterns to the mix just brings another dynamic to an already deep defensive backfield. Sterns is a bit more rangy and natural in pass coverage than Foster. He has the potential to manage the same turnover numbers that the departed former All-American safety DeShon Elliott did in 2017.
At the start of the regular season, we should see the likes of senior P.J. Locke III and junior Brandon Jones starting at the two safety spots. However, Sterns is the future of the Texas secondary and will get the opportunity to establish himself again in fall camp. He was an early enrollee so the coaching staff has already seen what he could do in spring camp and the spring game.
