Texas Football: 5 players with something to prove in fall camp
Texas has an underrated running back depth chart for the 2018 season. In a conference that has as many talented running backs as the Big 12, Texas can standout because of its depth and not the starter himself. Since the Horns don’t really even know who will be the Week 1 starter in the backfield, it’s hard to tell how the primary rusher will stack up compared to the rest of the Big 12.
There’s a pair of sophomore running backs for Texas that will both compete for the bulk of the workload this season between Daniel Young and Toneil Carter. Young and Carter combined to average more than 4.5 yards per carry and more than 550 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
True freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger led Texas in rushing yards last season and former running back Chris Warren III is now out of the picture. If Ehlinger is given a lighter workload with his legs this season, Carter and Young could get more carries this year.
Carter led the Horns in yards per carry last season among running backs and quarterbacks at 4.8. Young managed 4.6 and the other Texas running back that got a large workload was much worse off than anyone else at the position. Kyle Porter figured to potentially become the set in stone starter last year, but managed less than 3.5 yards per carry. Carter could take hold of the starting job if the right factors come together this fall.
