Texas Football: 5 players with something to prove in fall camp
The quarterback battle for the Horns will be among the most watched in the nation in fall camp. Texas is set to have a four player run at the starting quarterback job between Ehlinger, junior Shane Buechele, freshman dual-threat Casey Thompson, and freshman pro-style Cameron Rising.
Since there are two incoming freshmen that could now play into the quarterback competition, Buechele will have to step his game up even more. He’s had his chance to take hold of the starting quarterback job for two years and hasn’t taken advantage yet. It’s been an up and down career for Buechele so far.
Rumor has it that Buechele could potentially graduate and become and immediately eligible transfer following the 2018 campaign if he doesn’t have at chance at the starting job. He really only has one more shot to win the starting role. But, there was so much change between Charlie Strong and Herman in his first two years that Buechele does have an excuse for the inconsistency.
There were some positive takeaways from Buechele’s sophomore season last year, but Ehlinger has to be the favorite among the coaching staff and fan base to start at this point. It’s his opportunity to be the future quarterback for the Texas offense now, which means that no other player on this roster has more to prove his worth in fall camp than Buechele.
