It’s clear who has the best chance to both start and make an instant impact for the Texas offense among all the incoming freshmen this season. Four-star Carthage High School running back Keaontay Ingram was the highest rated at his position in-state. He was another one of the top prospects out of the state of Texas that the Horns were able to nab for the 2018 class.

Ingram showed a ton of breakaway speed and acceleration in the final stretches of his high school football career with Carthage. He was a star for Carthage in the state playoffs last season, and was one of the best high school running backs in Texas in recent memory in terms of career stat lines.

As a running back that has all the makings of an instant star for the Horns, tempered expectations for Ingram are difficult to figure out. A lot depends on how big of a role the coaching staff gives him early in the regular season. It looks as if Herman is giving senior grad transfer Tre Watson and sophomore former four-star prospect Daniel Young are the two rushers getting the most reps in practice.

Ingram might have to work his way up the depth chart to get more rushing attempts early in the season, but he should be able to work his way more into the mix in the latter stages of the 2018 slate. Texas will need fresh legs through a grueling schedule both in the Big 12 and out-of-conference by the final stretch run and Ingram will be extremely valuable for this offense when that time comes.
