The top-rated safety in the nation for the 2018 recruiting cycle is looking to snag a starting spot in the secondary for the Horns in Week 1 this year. Texas had quite the haul for the secondary on the recruiting trail for the 2018 cycle and freshman safety Caden Sterns looks to be ready to make the most immediate impact possible.

Even though Sterns doesn’t have the best size in the world, like that of former four-star safety prospect DeMarvion Overshown, he’s got the best mindset for starting this year for the Horns. If Sterns shows up right in fall camp after a solid showing in spring camp, there’s no reason why Todd Orlando shouldn’t give him some looks on Sep. 1.

A little bit of competition for playing time at safety this year for Sterns with Texas from fellow five-star 2018 safety prospect B.J. Foster. However, Sterns should be able to work his way past the likes of Chris Brown, Brandon Jones, etc. in the secondary pretty quickly.

Texas already lost a few players to transfer because of how seemingly deep this incoming freshman class is in the defensive backfield. The future is extremely bright for the Horns with safeties like Sterns, who can directly compare to former Texas standouts and current NFL stars like Earl Thomas of the Seattle Seahawks.
