3. Actual depth at quarterback

Last season, one of the most lacking position groups on the roster in terms of depth was at quarterback. The Horns had just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster last season, and one of them dealt with injury issues for the early part of the regular season. Texas is in a much better situation this time around.

Sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger and junior Shane Buechele were the only two scholarship quarterbacks rostered at the start of last season. This season, the Horns were able to add two talented freshman to the QB room between four-star dual-threat Casey Thompson and four-star pro-style Cameron Rising.

Thompson are likely to get their fair shot at the starting job under center if either Ehlinger or Buechele struggles consistently again this year. Both of the talented freshman quarterbacks have a ton of intrigue since they’re both recruits of Herman and fit into his scheme one way or another.

Buechele was not a recruit of Herman, but has the most proven arm and experience of the bunch. Ehlinger was a recruit in the first cycle with Herman, though. The point here is that the depth in the QB room might be one of the most valuable aspects of the roster that Herman and his coaching staff put together for the 2018 campaign.
