Texas Football: Why the Clemson series is a good idea for the Longhorns
An upcoming slate of matchups for Texas football that features Ohio State, Alabama, and Michigan, could now include the likes of Clemson.
With quite the difficult group of Power Five opponents slated for Texas football over the course of the next eight years, adding more to the mix needs to be thought through. The Longhorns have already faced programs like USC, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Ole Miss. While UCLA and Ole Miss aren’t the biggest programs in the nation, it’s still big for the Horns to have them slated in the past.
According to a source from 247Sports, Texas football is looking to add even more difficult non-conference opponents in the future by getting in talks with the Clemson Tigers, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Georgia Bulldogs. Texas is booked up for around the next eight years in terms of marquee out-of-conference games.
This report outlined that the soonest that the Horns are looking to add any of these three big-time programs would be the 2028 season. Georgia would be the first opponent on the table that Texas could get on the slate. Penn State and Clemson would come later on.
The thought of Texas landing an opponent out east that’s the level of Georgia, Penn State, or Clemson is awesome. Texas would have a marquee opponent slated for a span of time longer than the next full decade.
It would be a mistake to add to blue blood programs that are likely to be ranked inside the top 10 or top 15 during the same season. This fall will be difficult enough for the Horns to deal with between facing two Power Five opponents in the Maryland Terrapins and USC Trojans.
Here’s a look at a few reasons why adding a team specifically like the Clemson Tigers would be great for the Texas Longhorns’ football program.
