It’s unfortunate that Buechele got the short end of the stick in the quarterback competition this year, but a lot of people could’ve seen that coming. Reports did indicate that Buechele had a strong showing in the final week of fall camp and in the final scrimmage before the start of usual practice to prepare for Week 1 against the Terps.

However, it likely would’ve taken Buechele a massive performance in all of fall camp and in the two weeks after leading up to the Maryland game to ultimately win the starting job over Ehlinger. He didn’t finish off the 2017 campaign in the best fashion compared to Ehlinger, with Texas’ postseason victory over the former Big 12 foe Mizzou Tigers.

Buechele didn’t enter the 2018 season with as much momentum or potential foreseen as Ehlinger. He did have one of the best seasons of any Texas quarterback since Colt McCoy left campus following the national title loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, when he tossed 21 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2016. Texas would hope to recapture that performance level from Buechele if he does get a string of starts at some point this year.

Chances are that Herman gives a few starts to Buechele this fall. Both Buechele and Ehlinger split time last season pretty evenly. While Ehlinger should get more starts this season than last, Buechele will be waiting on the sidelines for his opportunity. If he doesn’t see a future for him for the 2019 season on the Forty Acres, Buechele could wind up graduating and transferring out to become eligibility immediately elsewhere following this season.
