Texas Football: What should the final QB depth chart look like?
This starting job is finally Ehlinger’s for the taking after one year of going back and forth due to injury issues for both him and Buechele. Ehlinger showed enough last season that he could be a potent option to lead this offense this fall. He also showed some progress in a few key areas of his game during spring camp and the spring football game to earn more trust from the coaching staff.
Until he proves otherwise, Ehlinger should be the set in stone starter for at least the early portion of the regular season. Last season, Ehlinger accounted for more touchdowns than Buechele and was a better fit for the current state of the offense. Given the offensive line issues and the lacking ground game production, Texas needed the improvisational skills of Ehlinger.
Similar to Buechele leading the way under center, Ehlinger needs the play calling to be a bit better in the red zone for his numbers to see a significant breakthrough in his sophomore season. Although he eclipsed Buechele’s production last year, he still only managed 13 total touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came on the ground for Ehlinger.
This time around, Beck should be more careful with Ehlinger with the play selection used early in the season. Too many times Ehlinger was caught running directly into traffic, and he went through concussion protocol already last season. Given the injury troubles the Horns are already having in fall practice, Ehlinger is very valuable to keep healthy for the success of the entire offense.
