Texas has a logjam of running backs to spread the workload around this season. Among that group in the backfield should be senior grad transfer Tre Watson, junior Kirk Johnson, junior Kyle Porter, sophomore Daniel Young, sophomore Toneil Carter, and highly-touted true freshman Keaontay Ingram. Yet, Watson, Young, and Ingram should be the featured backs to start the year.

We should expect a very heavy dose of looks to Watson early in the season due to his experience in his time with the Cal Golden Bears and his overall versatility. Watson has great hands and can block in the passing game when necessary. Mostly, he’s very elusive and quick off the first cut when used in the running game.

With more than 1,750 career total yards from scrimmage, Watson has more total yards than every other running back on the roster combined. And it’s not even close. That should be enough in and of itself for Herman to trust Watson in key situations like third down.

If you’re looking for a sleeper running back that will give solid production in both the running game and passing game, Watson is the perfect pick. He’ll be a very valuable flex player for anyone who selects him. Yahoo Sports does not have any Texas running backs ranked inside the top 60 in the nation, likely due to the uncertainty surrounding the distribution of carries. Watson is the best bet among every rusher on the Texas football roster, though.
