Texas Football: 5 bold predictions for the Longhorns in non-conference play
5. Sam Ehlinger is the starting quarterback throughout
For all to be well for the Texas offense in 2018, the quarterback position has to be settled. That’s something the Horns haven’t had at any point for consecutive years since the end of the Colt McCoy-era. Since the injury to McCoy, Texas has pretty much been doomed with its luck under center.
While we’re likely to see both sophomore Sam Ehlinger and junior Shane Buechele over the course of the regular season, it would be nice to have more continuity than in the past four years. Ehlinger and Buechele pretty much split the starts last season straight down the middle, and the rhythm of the offense paid the price because of it.
Last year, Ehlinger showed some promise to make something out of nothing due to his dual-threat ability. He was originally recruited as a four-star dual-threat quarterback hailing from Lake Travis High School in Austin. It’s a dream for him to be lining up as the starting signal-caller for the Horns and he’ll definitely leave it all out on the field for this team.
To start off the 2017 campaign, Buechele got the nod in the 10-point loss to the Terps. Due to some injury issues for Buechele, Ehlinger started the next two games in the win over San Jose State and the loss to USC. If Ehlinger can stay healthy and productive, then it will keep Buechele and the rest of the Texas quarterbacks on the sideline to start each non-conference game this year.
