Right Tackle

Starter: Derek Kerstetter, sophomore

Or: Sam Cosmi, redshirt freshman

We didn’t get to see anyone really play at right tackle last season outside of then-true freshman Derek Kerstetter. Now, Kerstetter will have a position battle on his hands as redshirt freshman Sam Cosmi will challenge for the starting spot. This is interesting since both Cosmi and Kerstetter were brought in through the same recruiting class.

Last year, Kerstetter did good enough manning the right tackle spot to warrant some promise for the rest of the years he spends on the Forty Acres. However, there’s still a long way that Kerstetter would have to go until he can help fully solidify the right edge of the offensive line.

A lot of what happens at right tackle will be a testament to what strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight was able to do with the starting personnel along the line. Herman usually raves about the job that McKnight does. However, we’ll see it in action as the position battle at right tackle plays out in the next few weeks.

Kerstetter and Cosmi were both rated as three-star offensive tackles as part of the 2017 recruiting class. In terms of pure talent and technical ability, Cosmi and Kerstetter are about on even playing fields. This is the only spot on the line that has yet to be determined who the starter will be for the season.
