Defensive End

Starter: Breckyn Hager, senior

Backup: Marqez Bimage, sophomore

A pretty bright future awaits the Texas defensive line. However, we shouldn’t overlook the present since there’s a ton of senior talent that is spread across all three starting positions along the defensive line. Texas has two sophomores backing up both defensive end spots and two seniors starting.

We’ll start with senior Breckyn Hager, who seems to have finally found his set role in the front seven. Hager moved between linebacker and defensive end to find his true role as an undersized but slippery edge rusher. Moreover, Hager is the first captain that we’ll list here and also was a representative for the Horns at Big 12 Media Days.

This is a new sign of trust from Herman that Hager is handed such a huge role for this defense. Todd Orlando also needs Hager to come through huge for this pass rush to be as good as it could be this fall. The depth is a bit thinner at defensive end now with the departure of sophomore Andrew Fitzgerald.

To maximize the depth and ceiling of the defensive end spot for the Horns, sophomore Marqez Bimage has to continue his push to start. Bimage is now set to start at defensive end in 2019 after the departure of Hager. Yet, he’ll have to stave off true freshman Daniel Carson in the battle to win a starting spot on the defensive line next year.
