Cornerback

Starter: Davante Davis, senior

Backup: Anthony Cook, freshman

While cornerback didn’t get as much of a boost from the 2018 recruiting class as safety did, there was still a ton of talented freshmen brought into the mix. One of those freshmen will get his opportunity to make an early impact this season in a key backup role in the former four-star prospect Anthony Cook.

By beating out the highest-rated cornerback signee in the 2018 class in Jalen Green, Cook solidified his spot as the second man up in one of the two cornerback positions. Yet, both Green and Cook figure to be key pieces at the cornerback positions for the Horns heading into the future.

What Cook brings to the table now doesn’t match up to what senior Davante Davis can provide this secondary opposite Boyd. It’s nice for the Horns to have two senior cornerbacks that are both rangy and have great ball skills. It was a big breakthrough for Davis last season to become a legitimate quality starter in the back half of the 2017 season.

At 6-foot-3, Davis has the best size among all the Texas cornerbacks. He could wind up as a solid prospect for the 2019 NFL Draft with a big 2018 campaign. That should provide a lot of motivation for Davis to have a massive senior season. It’s his last chance to make a run at the Big 12 Championship in Austin.
