X-Wide Receiver

Starter: Collin Johnson, junior

Backup: Brennan Eagles, freshman

3rd string: Jordan Pouncey, redshirt freshman

This is where Texas needs the ability to make plays on the outside. Whether that be through screens or bringing down jump balls from the quarterback, the x-wide receiver is one of the most important pieces of the entire passing game. It just helps that the Horns have a diverse set of talent available at this particular receiver spot.

Texas will rely on junior Collin Johnson as the primary target among all the pass-catchers this year. He led the team in receiving yards last season and truly established himself as a legitimate possession receiver. He’ll look to get more than 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career in 2018.

Watch out for two freshmen, of different experience levels nonetheless, to still make an impact. The highest-rated wide receiver signee of the 2018 recruiting class was former four-star high school prospect Brennan Eagles. Spring camp breakout receiver Jordan Pouncey could also make some waves for the next two or three seasons.

Following the departure of Johnson either next off-season or the one after, Eagles is a great candidate to replace him. He’ll be a dynamic option for Texas to look to beyond Johnson on the outside. The coaching staff should make it a priority to give Eagles some looks in key points of games this season.
