Texas Football: Breaking down the 2018 depth chart
Tight End
Starter: Andrew Beck, senior
Backup: Cade Brewer, sophomore
3rd string: Reese Leitao, redshirt freshman
Tight end should start to become more of a threat in this Herman and Beck offense come this fall and in the next two or three years. Texas has recruited much better at tight end over the past two cycles. That will start to pay dividends for the number of weapons in the passing game very soon.
Texas will also have the experience factor going for them at tight end with senior and captain selection Andrew Beck. Not only was Beck selected as one of the five captains for the Horns this year, he also was one of four representatives for Texas at Big 12 Media Days. He is very clearly the vocal leader that Texas needs at a developing position like tight end.
Interestingly enough, sophomore Cade Brewer could wind up with more receptions than Beck this season. Beck is a blocking tight end first as he has just over 150 career receiving yards and two touchdowns in his previous three years of playing in a Texas uniform. Before getting struck down by injury in his freshman season, Brewer was on a decent pace with nearly 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Herman has also mentioned during the off-season and into fall camp that redshirt freshman Reese Leitao will get some action too. True freshman Malcolm Epps is a name to watch at tight end in the coming years, but he could get a redshirt this fall. Epps, Brewer, and Leitao are the future at tight end for the Horns.
