Texas Football: Breaking down the 2018 depth chart
Left Tackle
Starter: Calvin Anderson, senior
Backup: Denzel Okafor, junior
All of the depth chart along the offensive line was only listed at two-deep. A likely reason for that is the lack of preparedness to start for some of the true freshmen at each position on the line. Highly-touted offensive tackle recruits like Junior Angilau and Reese Moore would be best off getting the redshirt this fall to develop their skill set and size.
At left tackle, the Horns are looking to replace the often-injured former All-American Connor Williams from last season. Williams departed following a year where he was barely present for the Texas offensive line, so replacing him shouldn’t be too difficult. Texas already had to survive without Williams for most of the 2017 season.
That left junior Denzel Okafor as the starter at left tackle for a good portion of the 2017 campaign. Yet, it was tough for Okafor to adjust, leaving Buechele and Ehlinger vulnerable pretty often. Okafor did show some sparks last season, but it’s a good thing that Herman brought in co-offensive coordinator Herb Hand and graduate transfer lineman Calvin Anderson from the Rice Owls.
Left tackle is one of the most important spots along the offensive line, and the Horns need a ton of help to protect in both the passing game and ground game. Anderson could end up as the staple this offensive line has looked for since Williams went down with injury. Enough depth is at tackle for the future for Anderson to be a one-year solution in 2018.
