There’s a lot that will go around as to speculation for the state of Texas football until some consistent success comes to the program this fall.

A heartbreaking and embarrassing Week 1 defeat marked the start of the 2018 regular season for the Texas football program. The Maryland Terrapins knocked off a No. 23 ranked Longhorns squad in the AP Poll for the second straight season. No one really thought around Texas football that losing to Maryland in a similar fashion for another year could happen.

Maryland had so much turmoil surrounding the program entering this season opener that Texas should’ve been able to take advantage. However, head Texas football coach Tom Herman learned the hard way that the growing pains will continue possibly for another season entirely.

Last season was a constant story of missed opportunities and close calls. This was yet another issue that saw the Horns make easily avoided mistakes when it matters most. The Texas offense turned the ball over three times in the last seven minutes of the fourth quarter. Two of those turnovers came off interceptions from sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger. The other one came from senior running back Tre Watson in his debut in a Horns’ uniform.

It did not work out too well for Texas to give Ehlinger the nod here, but Herman looks to stick with him in Week 2 against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. We’ll see how this Texas squad responds after an almost dumbfounding Week 1 loss to the Terps.

Here’s a look at five overreactions for the Texas Longhorns from the Week 1 loss to the Maryland Terrapins.
