2. Sam Ehlinger will have the exact same issues as last year

Of all the parts of this loss that felt familiar for the Horns, Sam Ehlinger’s struggles had to be the most similar. He didn’t toss a single pick until the last seven minutes of the fourth quarter, but it went pretty far downhill from there. Ehlinger had two key picks at points of the field where the Horns were threatening to score.

We can move beyond the obvious of mentioning the interceptions in the dying minutes that cost the Horns the game. Letdowns from the offense when it matters most plagued this team last season and it continued here. That has to stop for Texas to reach the next level, but the offense didn’t get to that maturity level during the off-season apparently.

Ehlinger had a few occasions where he overthrew his receivers. The highlighting play there was his overthrowing of junior wide receiver Devin Duvernay, who is one of the fastest players in the nation. Putting too much air on the ball was a huge issue for Ehlinger last year and that didn’t change too much in the season opener. It’s just lucky for him that Duvernay made a highlight reel catch.

Ehlinger still has some time to get these issues turned around. It was a huge factor for the Horns last season that the jitters were taking over in the first game of the year. That could’ve happened again and Ehlinger has some big games coming up. Yet, it’s tough to shake the feeling that it will be the same problems with him as last year.
