Texas Football: 5 overreactions from loss to Maryland
1. Texas is bound for another seven-win season
The scariest thing for Texas fans is the thought that this season could be the exact same record-wise as last. Some fans might even be left wondering if letting go of Charlie Strong came too early with the doubts of Herman’s coaching ability coming around. It’s too early this season for that reaction, as this fan base chomped at the bit at Strong before he could finish his rebuild.
Herman does seem like a good fit with this program, but the growing pains are enormous. He’ll definitely need to improve the record this year compared to last, but the signs from the season opener are not encouraging. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the next two weeks to give a more complete judgement was to what is to come for the full regular season.
Now, within the past three years the Horns have lost to Maryland twice and the Kansas Jayhawks once. The disappointing losses are really pilling up and the panic is sure to follow for some fans of this program. Already, the high expectations for this fall are crashing back to earth and that is a tough feeling for a program that set such a high standard in the past.
The Big 12 is a deep conference this year, but there were some signs of some of the lesser teams falling behind early. Texas needs to separate itself from the rest of the pack against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the USC Trojans in the next two weeks. That would give this team some confidence heading into the Big 12 opener against the TCU Horned Frogs.
